Newborn Posing Workshop

**PLEASE NOTE**ALL Photos of all three newborn models were Styled and Posed by Lindsay DeLisio Photography. All photos were shot and edited by Jeanette Ann Photography.

A few months ago, I was honored and so excited to snag and reserve a spot at Lindsay Delisio Photography‘s Newborn Posing Workshop! Lindsay is a reputable newborn photographer in our area and is located in Boardman, Ohio. I was thrilled to see she was offering this workshop, as I am always eager to learn more about my trade, especially from someone so seasoned in newborn photography. March 2nd couldn’t come soon enough, and just like that, it has come and gone. Let’s just say, my love of newborn photography grew ten fold from learning from her. I have such a passion for newborn photography and cannot wait for my upcoming newborn sessions that I have booked to apply what I have learned from this experience!

This past Thursday, myself along with four other photographers around the area, met at Lindsay’s studio where Lindsay along with her assistant, Melissa, shared how their workflow is from the time of booking, to the actual photo session, and how they end their work with their clients and ordering sessions. We had three newborn models come in where Lindsay styled and posed each session. The models ranged from two weeks old, 3 days old, and a week old. Newborn baby photography is best when taken within the 10 day mark! After 10 days, the baby tends to be more stretched out, more awake and aware of it’s surroundings. Being 10 days or younger, they are sleepy and still all curled up from being in the womb. This makes for the perfect setting to mold the baby into poses that are the sweetest and dreamiest photos! We were fortunate enough to see first hand, the difference each baby’s age makes for their photos!

I love newborn photography! I have always loved children, but never was around babies a whole lot growing up, until my best friends started having children of their own. I have a new sense of LOVE for newborns and babies! In my 30 years of life, I have experienced enough pain to last a lifetime. Being around newborns, you feel nothing but JOY! It could be a stranger’s baby and you feel such a huge sense of love and joy! (It’s just extra special when you personally know them! 🙂 ) I am happy to tell my clients and new parents that I am CPR and First Aid certified and have both my TDAP and Flu shots all up to date! I feel safe in knowing their new baby is safe in my arms and in my care during their session. I have acquired many fun props, wraps, bowls, head-wraps, and more to offer and have for my newborn shoots! Stylizing them to the client’s wants and needs per their request or design style of their home is something I always look forward to!

I have an obsession with props! And loved looking at all of Lindsay’s head-wraps for her baby girls!

There are a few tips I tell my parents before they arrive for their newborn session, but I learned even more helpful tips from Lindsay (which I am so happy to have learned!) These tips will help not only my parents as they prep for their baby’s shoot, but will help me in the long run of things of their session! I always tell my clients that even though they are trying to keep to a new schedule, try and keep the baby awake as long as possible…Lindsay suggested having them give the baby a bath before they leave to keep them awake and stimulated!! WHO KNEW?! haha I learned so many other great tips to share with my parents and am so grateful for these tips!

One of Lindsay’s tips was to only dress the baby in a diaper and zip or button up (no onesie underneath.)  This makes for the un-dressing easier and more soothing for baby!!!

During our workshop, we talked about camera settings, off camera flash, and white balance! We also talked about props and how simplicity is more and can give your clients a variety of poses, so their gallery of prints are well balanced and do not clash with one another! Lindsay has a huge passion for interior design and meets with her clients at their home for their ordering session. She take a look at their decor along with their wall area or where her clients want to hang their photos, and helps them decide which frames, styles, and sizes would work best for them! I loved this about her! She finds this to be her creative outlet in the entire newborn process! Myself, I can see myself doing something like this! This gives your clients the chance to view all of the photos you have taken, hold the proofs in your hands before you place your order, and you can envision what your newborn photos will look like on your walls! Who knows, maybe this is something I will offer in the future!!

We all were able to watch Lindsay pose and work with each model! We learned the proper and safe techniques in posing newborn babies and different poses a baby can be molded into for their photos! For safety concerns, we were not allowed to touch or pose the babies, but I was happy to just be able to watch her as she worked and talked us through each step of her process! She also gave us tips along the way, including my favorite, the tiniest little wiggle of an arm can make the baby relax and not stiffen up. It was literally like magic!!!! I wanted to see if she was hiding a magic wand anywhere!!! I also loved the tip of while removing a pacifier, place your pointer and middle fingers gently on the baby’s forehead, which will make for easier removal and the baby is not likely to move positions! We learned about camera angles and positioning ourselves to get the best shots and the best angles of the baby to capture! I soaked up every aspect of what this workshop had to offer and feel it will benefit my business and myself immensely!

The entire experience with Lindsay, Melissa, and they other photographers was so inspiring!  I learned a TON and gained such confidence with my newborn photography skills along with post processing and editing of the images I took! I cannot thank Lindsay enough for offering this workshop and for offering us her experience, knowledge, heart, and soul of what she does! I am honored to have had this opportunity and cannot wait to apply what I have learned in all of my future sessions!

Below are the photos I shot and edited from my time at the workshop! I have included all of them so you can take a look at the work we did and my editing style! 🙂
